Obituary

Helene M. Bartz formerly of Arlington Heights Helene M. Bartz, 87, passed away in the early morning hours of June 21, 2012, surrounded in the love of her daughter, Susan Bartz Paschal of Fayetteville, N.C., and her future son-in-law, James M. Herrick of Fayetteville, after a long and blessed life. Helene was born in Elgin, N.D., in 1925 to Henry and Marie Engelhardt. She married the Rev. Dr. Robert Otto Bartz in 1946 and had two children, Robert and Susan. The family moved to Arlington Heights, Ill., in 1957, where Helene was a teacher at St. Peter Lutheran School for 27 years. In 1983, after 35 years of marriage, her husband Robert passed away. In 1989 she married the late Joseph Kubik and resided in Arlington Heights until retiring to Naples, Fla., in 2002. Together they enjoyed traveling the world with Shaklee until Joe passed in 2010. An educator by nature, Helene went on to start two schools for the gifted in the Chicago area: Quest Academy, formerly known as The Creative Children’s Academy, in Palatine, Ill., and The Science and Arts Academy in Des Plaines, Ill.

Helene Bartz Has Made A Career Of Helping Find A Place For Misplaced Kids

Helene Bartz never tries to fit square pegs into round holes. Instead, the Arlington Heights resident has been making new holes for those odd-sized pegs in her role as an educator for more than 50 years.Take, for example, 13-year-old Beau Button, a gifted student from Harvard. Beau struggled to comply with teacher expectations during his two years at a private school in Woodstock. He understood intellectual theories of science but failed to notice people in a room and forgot to put his school bag or coat in his locker.
